Risin and Kellingin - The Giant and the Witch |
The famous Risin and Kellingin (the giant and the Witch) are two basalt pillars that soar hundreds of meters into the air. Risin and Kellingin could be characterised as the first tourists to the Faroes. According to ancient legendary tales, these giant folk came for a visit from Iceland. They were so smitten with the beauty of the Faroes that they determined to drag them back to Iceland. The giant began to pull on them, but the work was so hard, that his wife, the Witch, leaped into the water to help him. They became so preoccupied in their struggle that they did not notice the rising sun, which promptly turned them both to stone and there they have remained to this day.
